BrightSky Video Tutorials
In the last six months, the BrightSky team have produced over 100 live music videos without any training and using affordable equipment and software. In the next five weeks, we're going to share what we've learned through the BrightSky Blog.
As anyone who’s ever visited andydoyle.ie can attest, I’m not a web designer. My role here at BrightSky involves filming content for mixtape.ie, and other projects that the mixtape crew decide to embark on. At the moment, that includes two feature films, a documentary and a series of shorts. We began producing video about six months ago and since then, that activity has grown to dominate half of the business. None of us are trained in video production, but we’ve now made over 100 live music videos, many of which can be seen on mixtape.ie.
For the next five weeks, the Tuesday Tutorial will be dedicated to video production.
- Week 1 – Pre-Production (Planning)
- Week 2 – Production (Shooting)
- Week 3 – Basic Editing
- Week 4 – Multicam Editing
- Week 5 – Colour Correction
Next week’s Fun Friday post will be a behind the scenes look at filming an episode of Holy Joe’s Infernal Cabaret for mixtape.ie, and on the final week of the series, the Fun Friday Post will be a short documentary about the making of our first feature film.
If you’ve ever fancied yourself as a film maker, now is the perfect tome to start. High definition cameras can be bought for a few hundred euro, and basic software such as Final Cut Express costs about €150. At BrightSky, we use the full range of Adobe products, including Adobe Premiere, Adobe After Effects and Adobe Encore for film making. These products can be expensive but student versions cost less than a grand. If the budget it really tight, equipment can be rented cheaply from a wide range of venders, although as with anything, practice makes perfect and there’s no substitute to having your own gear.
With equipment being cheap and easy to use, all you need to make your first video is an idea.

Slight change of plan, we won’t be showing our behind the scenes footage of the Holy Joe’s shoot from last Sunday due to [insert excuse]. TUNE IN FRIDAY FOR A SPECIAL FUN FRIDAY POST.
